Meetings in Japan may take place in the
office or over a meal in a restaurant.
Gifts
Always make sure gifts are wrapped, as
this is important to the Japanese. It is best
to have the store wrap the gift for you to
avoid insulting your host.
Give and accept gifts with both hands at
the end of the meeting. Gifts should not
be opened in the presence of the giver.
Hand Gestures and Body Language
Avoid making the “Okay” sign with your
thumb and pointer finger as this means
money in Japan and can be easily
misconstrued.
Do not blow your nose in public and
pointing is considered rude.
Public displays of affection are also
considered distasteful.
Slurping your noodles or soup shows your
enjoyment of the meal.
Formalities
Drinking is a major part of Japanese
business culture. Never pour yourself a
drink; wait for your host to do so.
Make sure you give and receive business
cards in Japan with both hands and do not
place the card in a pocket or handbag. It is
best to use a cardholder.
