Flying can be tough for some adults... so you know it's hard for kids. But... I've got some tips to ease the "turbulence" - so to speak - next time you board a flight with your little one.
When you're at the booking stage - think about things like when your baby likes to nap. If it's the same time everyday try to schedule a flight around that time... that way they'll sleep while you're in the air.
Booking bulkhead seats at the front of the plane might seem like a good idea, but think about where you're going to store toys and supplies if there are no pocketed seats in front of you... they'll be in the overhead compartment making them less accessible.
When it comes to packing your carry-on... there are lots of things to think about. And, of course, it depends how old your child is...
If you're traveling with a baby... remember that changing tables are scarce on airplanes. So for diaper changing emergencies, keep a portable changing pad handy so you can change your child's diaper anywhere.
Always pack a change of clothes for your child, in case of an accident or spill. Also a good idea to pack some extra clothes in your carry-on for you... just in case you happen to take the brunt of the spill.
To keep your little one occupied, bring new toys or toys he or she hasn't seen for a while... it gives them something to explore for the first time on the flight.
And, of course, don't forget snacks. No one wants to be trapped on a plane with a baby or toddler who hasn't eaten. Some foods can also help kids with ear popping and keep them occupied in flight.
One last thing I want to mention is about car seats. They aren't required for young children but they are recommended.
If you can afford to buy your child a separate seat you may find they end up being more comfortable and likely to sleep than on your lap.
If you do end up with your child on your lap... a flight attendant can show you the best way to strap both of you in safely.
