Health
Many people deal with extreme anxiety when it comes to flying. Not only can it be the fear of crashing or terrorist attacks, but it can also be a distinct phobia such as claustrophobia (a fear of enclosed spaces) or acrophobia (a fear of heights).
In many cases it can be derived from the feeling of "helplessness" when on a plane. This can be caused by mandatory confinement to your seat for the majority of the flight, or the fact that your safety is in someone else's hands (the pilot).
People have been know to take tranquilizers prescribed by their doctors prior to take off, but this can leave one feeling loopy and sleepy. Some even use the "booze method" and drink away their anxiousness no matter how early the flight. I do not recommend this as alcohol has stronger effects at high altitudes, and you could easily arrive in destination zap-strapped to your seat for drunkenness or unconscious from too many chardonnays.
Here are some coping mechanisms to get your through the flight drug-free:
DEEP BREATHING TECHNIQUES
Deep breathing is a method of regaining control of shallow breathing which can increase the heart rate and cause stress. During episodes of anxiety or panic, breathing can become erratic, shallow and rapid, or occasionally the sufferer will hold their breath altogether.
Deep breathing exercises allow the individual to refocus their attention and make positive changes in their body's physiology.
Many therapists and counselors teach deep breathing techniques in their treatments or can be learned from DVD's, CD's, books or from group therapy sessions.
HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS AND SPRAYS
I have used these in the past and they have worked for me like a charm. Much of it could be the "placebo effect", but either way, they can help. Ask your pharmacist, natural path or do some research online to find out what will work best for you. But, be sure to consult your doctor before taking any herbal supplements.
Options include: St. John's wart, chamomile, valerian, passionflower and hops. Many of these options are mixed with other calming herbs and are packaged in a spray-form that can be squirted under your tongue for immediate results.
SELF HYPNOSIS
Many fearful fliers have used this method successfully. You can purchase a CD or MP3s online to prepare you for flight ahead of time or you can simply listen while in-flight. Most experts do recommend, however, that you familiarize yourself with the therapies and techniques ahead of time.
EDUCATION
In some cases, educating people with a fear of flying about the realities of aviation can considerably diminish their fears. Learning the mechanics of how aircrafts fly, how airliners are flown in practice, and other aspects of aviation can assist people with a fear of flying.
Education plays a very important role in overcoming the fear of flying. Understanding what a certain sound is or that an encounter with turbulence will not destroy the aircraft is beneficial to easing the fearful flier.
I do understand the fear of flying, but my greater fear is that it will prevent people from seeing the world, visiting family, or enjoying a well deserved holiday!
