If you've used your cell phone overseas only to come home to an astronomical bill - you're not alone. Here are some tips for avoiding that shock when you open your next bill...

I have heard stories of people getting home from trips abroad to cell phone bills in the thousands of dollars. This unfortunately, is not uncommon with some companies charging anywhere from $1 to $5 a minute. This can even be true for calls even if you just cross the border into the U.S.

Data charges are even worse when you're out of the country. Every time you send or receive an email, use your map services or internet on your wireless device... it's more likely than not to be costing you a bundle. This goes for your Black Berry, Palm Pilot, etc. The worst part is that you are charged for incoming emails, which of course you can't control unless you shut off the device while in destination.

That being said, there are ways to avoid a staggering bill. Here are a few things to consider:

If you have an iPhone or another wireless device that makes calls through WiFi - change your settings as soon as you reach your destination so that you're only using the "data" function when you have to.

This allows you to surf the internet for free or whatever you usually pay for the wireless internet connection. It is always a good idea to look into how to do this before you leave in case you can't figure it out while away.

Another tip is to sign up for an international e-mail or voice plan through your carrier, but beware because prices can be all over the map. It is important to know that these are usually monthly plans so you could end up paying for a feature consistently that you're not going to use very often.

A great option for people who are out of the country a lot is to sign up for an international data plan. But be sure to check the fine print. In many cases - you'll find the plan doesn't cover you for text messages or web surfing. Make sure you know what's covered and what's not.

Another way to get cheaper results on your regular cell phone is by downloading an application that enables your calls to get routed over a VOIP connection or Voice Over Internet Protocol. This option allows you to pay anywhere from nothing to just 35 cents a minute.

The best way to learn more about this option is simply by googling VOIP... a number of options and explanations will come up for you.

The last option to consider and one that is getting more and more popular is to use Skype. Skype is a system that allows you to speak over the internet through your computer. If you have your lap top with you while you're away this is a great option because Skype to Skype calls are free. If they aren't free you'll pay a very minimal amount to have overseas conversations.

Just Say No to Forwarding

Forwarding your work emails or general email account to your wireless device will cost you big bucks! If you forward your PDA while you're away or overseas, you will literally be charged for every office memo or silly forward your spam-sending friend emails out. This doesn't seem like a big deal while you're local, but as soon as you turn your device on when you step off the plane you are literally charged for every email that arrives in your inbox. I recommend giving your personal device address to as few people as possible, or at least make sure they know to use it for important situations only.
