Be a Considerate Tourist

Vacations are all about enjoying new sights and sounds and immersing yourself into the local culture. Travel should not be about irritating those around you with annoying tourist behavior. Here are some ways you can be a considerate tourist on your next trip:

First, do your research before you go.  Learn about the general layout of the city and where you hotel is from major attractions.

It is also important to plan how you will travel around before you go. Will you rent a car? Take taxis? Walk? Have a game plan so you aren’t wandering around looking lost and confused.

I have said this next one many times. Learn important phrases in the local language and actually use them.

People around you will appreciate your efforts and it definitely shows some level of respect rather than just assuming everyone speaks English.

And, don’t be a photo hog. It’s easy to get in a photo-taking “zone” where you are committed to trying to get that perfect shot but it is important to be aware of others trying to get photos too.

Simply snap a few shots and move on. You can edit, crop and filter later.

That being said, make sure you are careful when you are taking photos and don’t overstep barriers or do anything dangerous when taking pictures. The amount of deaths from people taking dangerous selfies has skyrocketed over the last few years.

And with this point, be mindful of others in general. Tourists get bad reps for traveling in herds so to speak and taking over the space. Try to walk single file and try not to walk slowly in high traffic areas where locals could be trying to pass on the sidewalk.

Pack the right clothing. Again, do some research a head of time and check that you're fully aware of traditions, especially when it comes to countries where religious or gendered customs.

If you are visiting a church in Europe, wear something that covers your shoulders and knees. If you are in Asia visiting a Buddhist temple. Make sure you have shoes that slip on and off easily.

And finally, try to blend in, in general. Study up on country customs, mannerisms and etiquette. You will be glad you did.
